Evaluation of the Performance of 1984/2050

Did I give 100% ?
I think I did not give 100%, I think gave about 80% because there was some moments in the production that I feel that I almost got distracted by some of the people in my year that came to watch the production. They kept trying to make my fellow actors and I laugh, for example when Courtney and I was doing our teddy bear training.

The world we created in the top 4 rooms was dark and distressing for example room 101,the food hall, O'Brien office and Stanley room, therefore we made the audience feel dull and distressed ,however when you look out the window you see my group singing and dancing outside , you saw a lot of people watching us outside the window. You saw a world that was not so sad , a world that had happiness and song. Something we did was expressed are self, through dance and song, A effect on the audience may be that not all is lost that there was still hope.

Before the performance started The masks we gave out, was to make them feel uncomfortable and trapped.  A effect on the audience was when woman that became part of the performance because she kept getting in trouble for taking them off continuously throughout our production and resulting into her put into room 101. A effect was, It made the audience feel like they were just a number, which help buy them into our world. The way people toke off their mask helped us to bring them into the performance and immersive them into the piece. We used the mask inspired from punk drunk to give the audience the freedom to perform, By giving then a mask we give them the chance to become someone else.

Multimedia - The use of computers to present text, graphics, video, animation, and sound in an integrated way.

In my group we used the multimedia of sound through are voices, when we sang the spy youth song to prays O'Brien. I also used my voice throughout the performance, like when at the start of the performance when I was protesting against thought criminals and I was asking people if they are a thought criminal or if they love O'Brien?

This was good because this helped to bring the audience into the world we lived in straight from them leaving the reception all the way up to O'Brien office. In addition,it had a effect on the audience  because it brought fear to them, straight from the beginning to the end.

The props we used was really good tools because we had posters that talked about the revolution and to get the audience informed about it we talked pass them and tried to put it in there hands and pockets, this was a very effective method used in our production.

We used dance at the ended that everyone did to suggest that we are all braking away from this idea of Big Brothers control and not being able to be express your self. We wore all black to suggest the idea of not being able to express your self and for everyone to look the same.

ROOM 101

The use of lighting in room 101 was really interesting because it was all blacked out but had glimpse of red , this could symbols to the spectators that you just walked into hell or a place of suffering.
The baby crying made the spectators have the feeling of being scared and not feeling comfortable. We used bright sodium light, that created a suffocated feeling of heat towards the spectators

The way the torture tools were just left there was really good prop because they performed for there self's. In room 101 they had a video of someone ripping someone's eye out, this had a big effect on the spectators because when some people saw the video they were scared, therefore the way the tools were left on the table suggest that they were going to use it on the spectators. The costumes that was used was blood on the torture team, this was really effective on the spectators because it made them think they really did kill someone and they were next.

Food hall

The sound of war is peace , freedom is slaver in a voice that felt died and broken was really effective towards the spectators because it gave them the experience of the dull life they lived in even at dinner time. Not much lighting was used only the normal lighting of the room.
Projectors of party supports on the walls and thought criminals emitting what they have done was really good because it suggest that they had been broken by Big Brother, a effect on the spectators was teaching that "you can do this" and "you can't do this", it showed them right and wrong.

The props and the posters with blood on them that were crossed out was a really good idea because half of it showed them supporting Big Brother and the other half showing hating Big Brother and them supporting the rebels. I think this was a really good contrast because it had a effect on the spectators to make them think whose side do I need to be on?

Another prop they used was soup that they served to people that came to the food hall, therefore this was effective towards the spectators because it showed them how dull peoples life's was in our production. The costumes used in the production for food hall was dinner lady outfits that were Black and white .

Stanley room

The sound we used was a hidden music box , with music that kept playing again and again,in a result of this, a affect on the spectator will be that we make them feel like they are in the times of where Stanley was and lived. The room lights were the only lighting source that was used in Stanley's room,There was no video used in Stanley room, however if there was a little tape in the corner that the audience could of just picked up and watched would have been really good in my opinion.

The props used in Stanley room was, the bed where Stanley and Rosa did their love monologues, a table and the record player that was playing olden music of the time. Stanley costumes was just all black top and trousers and black shoe, therefore this suggested to the spectators that his life was dull.

415-O'Brien office

Theatrical lighting was used for O'Brien speech , it was only used once, therefore, this had a effect on the audience because It only happened once, therefore resulting into the audience wanting to be there as soon as they could. The light of the computers , the computer had information of people in the world. The costumes that were just left there was performed even by it's self without anyone being there. The only sound used was The party people talking in there, the props were computer, cloths, books, posters etc.

There was a live feed video of O'Brien giving out speech's to everyone around the school, however it was mostly shown in the reception. There was no sound of dance in this room. Everyone was wearing ties and business wear in O'Brien office, a effect on the spectators would be them knowing they are in a place of business from the way they dressed.

The Space

Normal lighting ,set with x marked on the floor just left there something else that performed it's self, this was good because the audience just need to look at it and they will already start thinking of questions, therefore it made a effect on the spectators.

My Outfit

My Outfit

In the 2050 performance I will be wearing a plain black t-shirt,with black long trousers with no design because in 1984, they would not be wearing any fancy logos or anything like that. I am wearing this because I am meant to look simple and the same as everybody else in my group and also the same as the rebels.

I am wearing big boots because in war and in a revolution people will be wearing big boots because they will be doing a lot of actives, for example like running in mud, jumping, push up ect.

We also wore all black because we tried to give the feeling of  living in a world with no colour or no light, this was adapted from the film and book 1984 by George Orwell. This was very effective towards the audience straight from the beginning because our costumes gave a feeling of being in a dull world  from the beginning straight to the end.

Research on Salvador Allende

Salvador Allende

Salvador Allende became Chile's first socialist president in 1970 before committing suicide during a 1973 military coup.

Allende was elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 1937, and eventually served as minister of health. During this time, he helped implement such social reforms as higher pensions, a free school lunch program and safety laws for factory workers.
Allende was elected to the Chilean Senate four times from 1945 to 1969.

Salvador Allende declared his commitment to Marxism and desire to promote a socialist Chile. In the Senate, Allende consistently defended the interests of the working class and attacked capitalism and imperialism, siding with the Cuban Revolution.

During this time, Allende also ran for president unsuccessfully in 1952, 1958 and 1964, before finally winning in 1970.

When Allende took office, Chile was enduring a severe economic crisis. Unemployment was high and an estimated half of the country's children under the age of 15 were suffering from malnutrition. Allende immediately implemented his socialist agenda, increasing wages and freezing prices while taking steps to reform the education system, health care and government administration.

Research on George Orwell taken from Talk on George Orwell

Dystoplanism is a society characterized by human misery, as squalor, oppression, disease, and overcrowding.

Totalitarianism - 1. the practices and principles of a totalitarian regime.
2. absolute control by the state or a governing branch of a highly centralized institution.
3. the character or quality of an autocratic or authoritarian individual, group, or government:the totalitarianism of the father.

Eric Arthur Blair (25 June 1903 – 21 January 1950),known by his pen name George Orwell, was an English novelist, essayist, journalist and critic. His work is marked by lucid prose, awareness of social injustice , opposition to totalitarianism , and commitment to democratic socialism. He has lived through 2 world wars in his life tim

He is one of the first people to think of journalism. He was involved in opium trade in India(Opium- A bitter, yellowish-brown, strongly addictive narcotic drug prepared from the dried juice of unripe pods of the opium poppy and containing alkaloids such as morphine, codeine, and papaverine its is also Something that numbs or stupefies).

By 1947 - England disuse to decolonisation , like India- that became a democracy not a dictatorship

George Orwell may be telling us we are going to be living in a life when we are actually always been watched by people. George Orwell wanted a betters life for other people.

In 1947 , George Orwell goes up to Wigan, housing problems (movie good to watch , it shows what life was like for the working class).

George Orwell had bronchitis, therefore he moved because he smoked a lot , so he went and lived in the country side because the air was cleaner.

Ministry of information is where George Orwell worked in room 101. There is a lot of totalitarianism in 1984 and Find out what totalitarianism is?

Rosa and philips/Stanley's monologue

Rosa Monologue

Stanley, Stanley I don’t understand how this emotion or what this emotion is but all feel is this warmth when you’re near me or the words get stuck in my tongue like stutter.  When you bumped into me, my heart knocked the books from arms and across the floor…. (Touch his face) when I realised it was you I didn’t know what to do because all that echoed in my brain was THOUGHT CRIMER…. THOUGHT CRIMER and I didn’t understand. I’m ready to take the risk… but only if you are. The feelings I have aren’t natural but their here and their still true feelings. The betting that we will get caught is high but at least we died trying. (Slowly walks around looking round looking at every detail) My mind is made up of how I feel and I can’t change unless you brain wash me into changing my mind.  I don’t know whether to admit it to you yet about how I feel as I’m scared myself but this is the only risk I will ever take in  my life which yes may cost my life but I am willing to take it. The most important thing is where together … here right now and that’s all that matters ?

If Big Brother hears what I’m saying or thinking I dare to think what they would do to me. My heart fears when I think this… but I think of you and its all worth it.  Things they do to people when if they find about thought crime are horrible but if I can just have a another second with you it would be worth it.

I can I finally say it without being scared… I love you

Monologue of Projector Video

My name is Stanley…. I have committed some serious offence such as thought crime and sex crime. I thought to myself that it was okay to think this and behaviour in this manner, but it wasn’t. I thought it was okay to commit my hatred towards Big Brother and mentally disobey Big Brother, but it wasn’t.  But after all I went though Big Brother found me in this state and helped me though and I asked them to forgive me and they did. I was happy that they found or wise I would still be living like this. So I am encouraging you to love our leader, follow Big Brother and support Big Brother…..Because War is peace, Freedom is slavery, and Ignorance is strength.

This is my groups onologue for the projection video. this is when Stanley and Rosa are on their date after  in room 101. my group and I wanted a element of multimedia is this scene to emphasis what room 101 can do to people and how it effects them afterwards. also, to show the audience their true feelings after room 101 and how Big Brother use brain washed people into using them as advertisement to promote Big Brother as a good power leader.

To improve this monologue and the scene my group could have made a monologue of Rosa to say her opinion of Big Brother and to show the audience how she was brain washed into this. Also, we could have a thought track of how they are truly feeling about the video and one of them could still have a hate towards Big Brother and still be a thought criminal

Evaluation of devising lesson

WWW: I listened and gave some very positive contributions by not saying someone's idea was wrong but by saying in my own optinion, this may not work and why. Also I toke in comments as well as gave them out. I al described the performance potential through my ideas , for example with poster saying "big brother is watching you" and "wanted" with a image of someone underneath the text written above.

EBI: I did not think of the effect on the spectator which is something that is very important that I need to watch out for next time. For example on of out ideas was flashing lights and that may be bad for some spectators while the performance is going on, however we could have a poster saying flashing lights display in this bit of the performance for people that don't want to see flashing lights.

Prezi Link and Research Seminar Notes

Prezi Ideas

my prezi link is http://prezi.com/0rtz0e4rs4fu/edit/#60

Research Seminar Notes

Lara and I made the blog for the whole class and we editted the blog to make it look more like 1984 with lots of big brother notes.

The class looked for anything we could use in the play and anything they could find about 1984. for example we thought of this for a costumes:

What the women is wearing could be something all the girls could wear because everyone one could be wear the same thing, however the men and womens costumes will be slightly different shown in the picture above.

We have this picture shown again and again in a kind of collage. In a way this suggest that O'brien is always watching you everywhere you look and everywhere you go.

Multimedia Experiments x 3

Multimedia Experiments x 3

My group are filming eyes to show that people are always been watched, therefore so we are showing different peoples eyes. When you get use to the cameras, it feels so much easier and better to do things. Also it is nice because for our idea we have more them one idea, therefore we had to try out different ideas and that's the way to make things work properly.

Also another idea was that someone was being trialed and that person is trying to say something but there is someone ripping the words out of the dictionary, therefore to show that we are not able to say the words we want to say. We would go "I want to be..." and we will pause because the word freedom may be ripped out of the dictionary, therefore that person will not be able to use the words they are trying to say.

Also another idea is that we project words coming out of someones head saying somethings like "I am sad or I want to be free", but they will not be able to say it out loud, so there will be a projection of themselves saying no stop don't say that, things like that etc.

For the eyes idea we used the camera and I thought as a idea we could have a collage of everyone's eyes because this could also suggest that they are always being watched, for example this:

This will be a good idea because everyone in Year 10 Theatre have different yes colours, therefore it will be interesting to have the collage with everyone's different eye colours

Another Idea was to use live feed from a room while a live execution is happening and they family is watching there family member die in the other room. Also it will be on the television, therefore everybody under big brothers control  will be able to see what is going on IN THE ROOM 101. Everybody will be watching what is happen to somebody in a room right next to them like this:

1984 Theatre Notes

1984 Theatre Notes

We are using 7 locations:
1)Lecture theatre
2)Class room 418 411 415 413
3)The space
4)And all the hall ways
5)And the green space
6)Turning circle near the big trees outside
7)Outside

411 - The going to be room 101 the torture room. They torture you with your fear. We can get torture tools, torture hand book, people screaming down in the other room.

413 - food hall, we could be serving the audience oats and discussing food to get to know hoe life felt in that time.

415 - o'brains office/ there will be video of the audience moving room and videos of the thought  criminals

The space - the group hate room, where there will be footage of the rebellions and the revolution.

In the hall ways - videos of the education on the lockers and propaganda slongs and

Lecture theatre - reception area where very cold people will be talking " thank you can you come here"

Outside : court yard - area of excise and joy camps that are actual  forced  labour camps.

Outside area when the rebels want the audience to join them and take then around

We are gonna be creative a immersive theatre experience.

We are creating something they audience led, The audience are like a performance as well.
All the audience will be wear mask, the set must be detail and used with detail , sight, touch, smell .

Some of the space will have multimedia in them, With special effects etc.

The audience is their own story teller. The performance will last 1 hour but we are going to create 4 or 5 hours of performance

For example a strong beginning when we get there emails etc. And get masks then they will be release to walk around

Are play is going to be 2015 not 1984. We will have a type of Revolution.
(Research other companies)

You need to think about the set and the props you will need in your  performance.
We need to think of the type of costumes they would have warn. There will be a very security army Leading people around.

1984 Film

  • Life is very controlled they do what they are told, they get told to stretch in the morning and put on the track suit and go to breakfast with everyone else.

  •  Everybody wears the same thing , the woman's and the men. People live alone, for example, the men sleep in a room by there self and the woman sleep in a house all by there self.

  • The technology is not advanced as technology today at all and it is obvious to notice.

  • The roads look like a war scene and it is all wrecked.

  • A woman falls and main character picks her up. She has a broken arm as well. Also they did this because she gave him a note saying I love you . This is the woman he loves and she loves him too.

  • They had little child that go around calling people a thought criminal. They will have public executions and people will cheer as they kill someone.

  • They use propaganda to trick people that everything is OK and nothing is wrong .

  • The hope they have is they can't get inside you.

  • Theme: betrayal  - Winston smith betrays Julia and Julia betrays Winston Smith

Secret Cinema
They create large-scale cultural experiences in abandoned spaces, fusing film, music, theatre and installations. Audiences explore ultra-immersive worlds where fiction and reality blur.

Audience is the storyteller!

The audience is left free to roam the multiple rooms of intricately designed, theatrically lit stage sets. Creating hazy moments of sensory spectacle,
They can explore empty rooms, rummage in draws, read notes, letters and books. A phone booth that actually works?
Audience will be inside the space, walking through site-specific installations, choosing what scenes to see, changing and elaborating the text, creating movements and physically responding to actions to create site-responsive theatre. The performance will never be the same.
Combining text, movement, video, objects, sound, lights and visuals, we aim for a ‘total experience’, for ‘transportation performances’ that result in rendering powerful emotions and eye-opening adventure

Immersive Theatre

Immersive Theatre is all about creating participative theatre experiences in which audience members give up their “observer’’ status to become co-actors and co-creators of the narrative and of the storytelling process. Our audience members are action wise performers who direct the story by taking decisions, choosing from infinite options and negotiating the process.

‘Immersive theatre’ has shifted the spotlight toward experiential design-led performance, in which the audience is the centre of the action. This proliferation of immersive performance work demonstrates a public appetite for hedonistic theatrical thrills, where the audience is offered an ‘authentic’ experience in a realistic staged environment.

1984 Rules of engagement

The audience must be dressed in boiler suits (or something cheaper, sash?)
·     The audience is given free reign to explore a massive set
·  The set engages multiple senses—sight, sound, smell, touch—and has an incredibly detailed design
·     The set must be large enough to get lost in or to feel totally alone at moments
·     The set lighting is typically quite dark with deliberate, staged pockets of light

Immersive Theatre Companies :
